To the Pleunis Family,
Please acccept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your mother. I enjoyed learning so much more about her then I knew by reading the obituary. She led a very interesting life indeed. My connection with her and your father came through my late husband, Roger, who came to work at the nursery in Island View in 1972. When your family moved from the house on the property and came to Nova Scotia, we moved into the house and subsequently adopted Mama Black when she returned from her summer adventures.
Roger and I moved to Lawrencetown in the Valley in 1978 when he took on a job at the Nursery there and renewed our acquaintance with your parents. I remember them coming to our home to get a grape vine that we wanted removed and I'm sure they were successful with replanting it. They were happy to see Mama Black had made the move to NS with us. I exchanged Christmas cards with your mother for many, many years and always looked forward to hearing from her.

I never met Mrs. Pleunis but I knew some of her children and went to school in Middleton with Wouter. Now I know where he got his ambition and passion for the world and travelling. My condolences to the family. What a beautiful family!

We were saddened this morning to see your mom’s obituary Els. Just two weeks ago Mark and I were driving through Tremont and we wondered if your folks were still living there and if we would be able to find it. I’m sorry that we didn’t realize your dad had already passed. We met your folks once at their Tremont home and they were so welcoming. One of those visits you never forget. You could tell it was a home filled with love. (And plants. I remember lots of plants and the most beautiful and largest hibiscus I have ever seen. Today whenever I see a hibiscus, I think of hers.) We think of you Paul, Talia and Kyria often and will be even more so in the next few weeks. Would love to see you. Take comfort in the many memories you have of this remarkable woman. Please pass on our condolences to the rest of the family as well.

When I graduated from dental school in 1976, I returned to Berwick, my home town, to practice. One morning soon after I opened my practice, the waiting room suddenly filled with with the Pleunis family from Kingston! Being from a large Dutch family myself, I immediately connected with these lovely people.
Over the years, the children grew and left home, but the relationship my wife and I had with Charlotte and Johan grew. We visited their homes in Tremont and Annapolis Royal, where they shared with us their interests and love of nature and music. One afternoon I enjoyed the gift of a guided tour in Charlotte’s ‘studio’, where I discovered her interest and knowledge of geology. They gave us four rhododendron plants, specially adapted for Nova Scotia winters, which have grown large at our previous home of 27 years in Wolfville. Johan gave freely of advice on ‘living life’, and several of his ‘tips’ spring to mind from time to time as I travel my course.
One summer we hosted their Granddaughter Talia at our home while she attended a camp at Acadia University, and when she left, she gifted us with a beautiful vase with tulips on the sides. Like every good Dutch boy, tulips abound in my yard and are my favourite flower, and whenever I pick a bouquet and arrange them in this vase, I think fondly of the Pleunis family.
Charlotte and Johan lived a large and full life, and I will enjoy memories memories of them in the years ahead.

To the Pleunis family: My sincere condolences to the family. Although I did not know Mrs. Pleunis, I did know her daughter Anneloes, a good friend, as we worked together at the Nursery in Lawrencetown, many years ago. Keep your memories close, treasure them, and they will help you through this trying time. take care. Sharelle McGill.
