Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Marguerite (Speed) Britton– 96 of Annapolis Royal, NS With great sadness, the family of Dorothy Britton announce her passing Sept. 10, 2021 peacefully at home. A beloved mom, to her dying day she never ceased to let her children know she loved them dearly. It was her most heartfelt desire to see them grown up, having lost her own mother at age 8 due to TB. Mom was always the first to call on our birthdays and wish us love. She loved to tell stories of her childhood playing hop scotch, piano and proudly graduating from Saint John High with Honors (a considerable accomplishment for an adopted child in her day). She grew up in the Great Depression with hardship and remained humble and kind lifelong, loved by those who came to know her. Mom was born in Saint John, NB, on Feb. 22, 1925, daughter of Harold & Minnie Lane. After her mother’s death, she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Ormand & Pearl (Chamberlain) Speed. Following graduation, she worked for the city of Saint John (tax and water depts in administration) where she met and married John E. C. Britton in 1953 (Oak Bay church). Mom sewed her own wedding dress and many of the clothes we wore as children. They lived in Fredericton for a brief period and then in 1958, moved to Annapolis Royal, fixed up an old home and remained thereafter. She loved gospel music, animals, esp. cats (recently Bella), watched soap operas, square danced, cooked, played badminton and traveled. Mom is survived by her three children – Diane, David & Stephen – and several nephews & nieces. She was pre-deceased by our dad, her parents (birth and step), sister Doreen Walker and brothers Garnet, Harold & Theodore. A sincere thank you for your kindness and caring is sent to Cindy, Theresa, Susan and Sandy as well as our VON Home Care workers, Dr. Hancock and mom’s cherished hairdresser Louise. Resting at Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal, 902-532-7555. Visitation Thursday, Sept. 16, 7 to 9 PM. Gravesite ceremony at St. Alban’s Anglican Cemetery, Lequille, Friday Sept. 17th at 3 PM. Memorials may be made to the IWK Hospital or the Food Bank of your choice. We were so blessed to have her as our Mom. Online condolences may be made at www.kaulbachfamilyfuneralhome.com
