John and Anne were such splendid neighbours, affable and kind. Their move to the "cottage" on the Annapolis River allowed me to extend my relationship with them. Anne was the voluble and chatty one, but chats with John as he read outside further revealed his
"keen sense of sardonic humour." My introduction to John first came from my Uncle Hugh MacGlashen who, as Director of Assessment for Nova Scotia, remarked to me, just after he learned that John had moved to Bridgetown, about his experience with John's notable expertise in Municipal Affairs.I extend my sympathy to Anne, Fiona and Janet at this difficult time.

I was a student with John, worked with him at the Graham Commission on Education, he was my boss at Municipal Affairs and for thirty years our 'go-to' guy on government finance ...be its historical evolution or interprovincial comparisons. He had a strong vision of social responsibility and he mentored all those he assembled around him. He was self effacing and good natured and he accepted being called 'Spider' on the Department's basketball team.
His move to Bridgetown may have made him less accessible to us but his insatiable curiosity and work effort always made him the most knowledgeable at any boardroom table when we met. I am sure the trips to Halifax took more time away than his family expected but many little groups were anxious to pick his brain.
In all our various versions of 'retirement' we would from time to time meet for supper. It would be an evening of family updates and John's dry wit savaging some past or recent political developments.
I am just one of many who will always be grateful not only that our paths crossed but for the support he gave me on my own path..

Was so sad to read Johns passing. He was my 'go to' from when he starting practicing in the 80's until I left for Australia many years later.

Kathy and I knew John on a professional level for many years, and eventually became neighbours and close friends after he and Anne moved to Washington Street. Beginning in the 1980s, John and I worked together on local applications of the Planning Act, the Heritage Property Act, and the Municipal Government Act when in addition to his work for the Department of Municipal Affairs, he was solicitor for the Annapolis District Planning Commission, the Town of Bridgetown, and Annapolis County. John was quickly to the point in municipal land use law, having had a hand in the drafting of those key Provincial documents. I always marveled at his solutions - neat, community-based, definitive. To John, the law always had a purpose, and it worked. As neighbours, we admired his intelligence, dry sense of humour, and kind manner. We will miss seeing him in front of his house reading, and stopping for evening chats. We send our sincere condolences to all John's family.

John was an excellent economist, lawyer and thinker, whose legacy will last long into the future. His work on the Graham Royal Commission, on the municipal grants system, on insurance legislation and countless bylaws and projects over the years has left the Province of Nova Scotia a fairer and better place. His ability to analyse problems after a long train ride to Bridgetown was legendary. His laconic voice and quick sense of humour was always appreciated. His love of his family, and concern for Anne and his daughters was always top of mind as he headed back to the Valley! He will be missed! Barb Jones

I was fortunate enough to get to know John during his time providing legal advice at the Department of Municipal Affairs. He was an absolutely brilliant man and a delight to talk with on a broad range of subjects. That was about 30 years ago yet from time to time in the years since my encounters with him continue to surface in my memory, such was the impression he made on me. The comment in his obituary about him being "the smartest guy I've ever met" is not one I would take issue with. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I feel fortunate to have met John in the mid-1990’s during municipal work on financial programs and the like. So smart such a funny dry wit, and very kind to the newbies in the room like me as we got ourselves slowly up to speed. Despite decades passing without running into him my memory of his presence in a discussion on municipal governance/funding etc is as clear now as then. ‘John R’ as I always think of him, was a delightful, knowledgeable person - my sincere condolences to his friends and family.

Raspberry pies being made from his own donated berries, late night New Year's Eve puzzle parties, three girls which he adored, and a real friendship. These are the things my mother and I remember the most about John and cherish as memories of our time in Bridgetown. Our thoughts are with you, Fiona and Janet, in this time of sorrow.

I had the privilege and pleasure of dealing with John as a fellow lawyer from 1980 onwards. I always appreciated John's professionalism, courtesy, dry wit, and his willingness to give me his sage advice (free) at the drop of a hat whenever I had a question on a file or situation. He was always available to his peers and his clients when called upon. Both the legal community and the community in general have lost a pillar of strength and wisdom. He will be greatly missed.
Sincere sympathies to John's family and his friends.
Thanks for everything John.
