I grew up next door to Andy Powter in Saint Catharines and never knew his mother. He was like an older brother, and introduced me to history, which became my calling. I am sad at his passing, sadder that I lost touch with him after he left for university.

I just found out about Andrew's passing. He was my first supervisor when I started working with Heritage Conservation Program in Ottawa as a Conservation Architect. I have only the best memories from the time we work together on projects in Grand Trunk Central Station. My sincere condolences to Andrew's family. RIP

The following is the In Memoriam prepared by colleagues at The Association for Preservation Technology International.
Andrew Powter died on February 3, 2022. For Andrew, a conservation architect for 30 years who held senior roles in the Canadian federal government, preservation was a mission, a source of inspiration, and a way of life. His favorite fields of interest included wood conservation and sustainable conservation. Andrew combined his love for preservation with that of travel visiting heritage sites around the world often with conservation colleagues met through shared interests.
Conservation projects that Andrew managed over the years span all of Canada and beyond, from Dawson City in Yukon to lighthouses in Newfoundland, including the Parliament buildings in Ottawa and Canadian World War 1 memorials in France and Belgium, as well as many other significant historic properties in every one of the Canadian provinces and territories. Because of his expertise and experience, Andrew had an active role in a number of conservation–related organizations at the local, national, and international level. He was an active member of APT, ICOMOS, ICOMOS-Canada, and the ICOMOS International Wood Committee.
Andrew joined APT in 1976. Over the past 45 years, he was involved with APT’s conferences, publications, committees, chapters, and training programs. Andrew served on the Board from 1996-98, and chaired the Training and Education Committee. On the Board, he is remembered as wise and thoughtful, with a quiet presence that would suddenly introduce an idea or comment that would raise the discussion to a new level. In 1999, Andrew co-founded APT’s Ottawa Valley / Outaouais Chapter, that was conceptually a large chapter linked electronically, recognizing the opportunities of new technology, and foreseeing connections that have become commonplace in the last two years.
Andrew’s knowledge and skills were extraordinary, as well as his willingness to share his time and expertise with others. In 1993, he served on the organizing committee for the Ottawa APT conference and was responsible for its training programs. In 2004, Andrew co-founded the APT Technical Committee on Sustainable Heritage Conservation, and helped to publish a special issue for the APT Bulletin, and organize a two-day symposium for the APT Halifax conference on the theme of sustainable heritage conservation. Andrew was elected to APT’s College of Fellows in 2005.
Andrew retired to rural Nova Scotia after leaving the federal government in 2006 where his love of heritage continued: rehabilitating a heritage property on the Bay of Fundy, supporting local heritage sites, and restoring a small fleet of Studebakers.
Andrew was intellectually brilliant, accomplished in so many things, and modest in demeanor. We have lost a special friend.
The family have designated APT’s endowment fund for anyone wishing to make a donation in Andrew’s name.

Andrew was an amazing person of great intelligence, so full of fun and passionate about so many ideas and pursuits, from history and heritage to travelling and hiking to gardening and watercolour painting and restoring antique cars. He was quietly influential and wonderfully kind in his roles as teacher, mentor, project leader and friend to so many of us. I feel deeply fortunate to have known him. My sincere condolences to Andrew's family, to Wendy, and to all his colleagues and friends around the world. He is missed.

It is with such saddest that we learned about the passing away of Andrew.
Andrew was an esteemed and a respected colleague, and he was, a cherished friend. Wolfgang, my husband, and I, have such good memories of Andrew and his loving family when I was working with him in Dawson City in the Yukon. Andrew was my supervisor for many years. He was always so generous in sharing his knowledge, his experience and wisdom. He was always so kind, supportive and compassionate when one of his staff members was dealing with difficult personal challenges. He will be dearly missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.
We send the family and extended families our deepest sympathy.
We wish you all the strength and courage to go thru this trying grieving period.
Your sorrow is in our heart,
Lyette and Wolfgang

Andrew was a valued and respected member of the Atlantic Canada Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club. We were all shocked when we heard of his passing. Although I always enjoyed chatting with him at club meetings, I can personally say, after reading his obituary, that I wish I had known him better. My sincere condolences to the Powter family.

Not surprising, this news has been difficult to process. Andrew always seemed larger than life. The ultimate Renaissance man who knew how to do everything and if he didn’t know how to do something he figured it out. He definitely did “dive” into life. I feel grateful that I knew Andrew first as a mentor as I was developing my skills in the conservation field, and then as a colleague and friend. He had the greatest laugh that lit up the room. My heartfelt condolences to Andrew’s loved ones. He will be missed.

It was with shock and much sadness that I learnt of Andrew's untimely passing. He was one of the 'good ones'. I was privileged to have him as a work colleague for many years, and was always impressed by how he balanced family and work, always proud of both. He was a passionate Conservation Architect and his work has left its mark. In retirement, with more time on his hands, he got to indulge in such an incredible range of outside interests. Andrew was an example of a life richly lived and he will be missed.

Andrew will be missed by his friends in the heritage conservation community. He taught us so much. His passion for heritage buildings and vintage vehicles was contagious. Andrew was curious. He had a great sense of humour.
In Ottawa, a group of us would gather around a table for a bi-monthly breakfast. We were planning a visit in June to Hampton. Andrew, despite the distance, we already feel the void of your absence.

So very sorry to read of Andrew’s passing. I only knew him briefly - he drove my brother-in-law Ronan and his friend Abbey, in his Model T or A (don’t know my cars) to Abbey’s High School Prom in Bridgetown. And what a drive that was down the Hampton Mountain Road!! But Andrew enjoyed every minute of this task to drive these two. It is a delightful memory of Andrew.

I met Andrew early into his moving to the Bridgetown area; I removed a ink spill from a new car upholstery and he repaid me by shoring up my porch. Having another conservation specialist move in so close was such a wonder for me. We became good friends and I had the privileged to have worked with Andrew on a number of conservation/ heritage projects over the years including the Painted Rooms with Heritage Trust. He was very gifted in looking at conservation from a number of different perspectives that I appreciated. We both had a love for old buildings and I enjoyed seeing all the changes he made to his home in Hampton and the vehicles he restored. And I am lucky to be able to take credit for introducing Andrew to my friend Wendy. I really didn't do much, but it brought me great joy to see the two of them so happy together. I will miss that funny sort of giggle /hiccup laugh when we would get chatting about stupid stuff we were working on. So thanks to a faulty pen my friend.
