Memories of Len, My Uncle and Godfather
It is with a heavy heart that I heard of the passing my Uncle Len. My thoughts of course have been with his family, far and wide, these past few weeks. I have many fond memories of Len over my lifetime. The earliest ones in Haliburton, ON and the latter at their home in Upper Clements, ”Summer Tides”, after he and Judy moved to Nova Scotia. Visits with the Creelmans were always a happy time, centered around good cheer, wonderful food, a view of the water, and thoughtful conversation.
Len, always greeting you with a welcoming smile, a warm laugh, and a sincere “Hello Christopher, so good to see you”, reaching out with a strong hand and air of genuine happiness that you’ve arrived for a visit. There was always an offer of a glass of sherry, Savory & James, or a cold beer on the deck. One was to relax and enjoy life while visiting the Creelman's house. If a BBQ was planned, Prime Rib would be the best choice. Of course marinating it on the grill with splashes of red wine from your glass would be the only seasoning necessary for such a choice cut. Simple and common sense was the way to get things done.
While traveling between Haliburton and Nova Scotia by road, the route through Maine was the preferred path. Things are better there, the roads, the ice cream cones and of course there is a special Olive Garden in Bangor. I’ve eaten there with Len. He was right, it is worth the stop. Don’t forget to pick up a bottle or two of the best sherry; it will be needed later on.
No garden or yard was complete until a homemade water feature was installed. A small pool, some hidden tubing, and a little electric pump provided the perfect trickling sound in the background. This helped make Judy’s beautiful gardens a special place for children to wander and take delight, for water in motion comes alive is joyful.
This and a multitude of other ingeniously engineered and one-of-a kind projects were always a wonder for a young nephew. Technology was commonly involved. Computer programs for architectural drawings of houses and aircraft, internet signals beamed across a neighbour’s meadow, an early surround sound audio system for Alice, Dad’s new barn fully wired, complete with remote on/off lights and a voice calling feature from the house. On another, much higher level there was the Seawind, a pure masterpiece of aeronautical engineering, design and grace. I still remember the postcard on the fridge, so proud that my Uncle and his brother Roger had created this amazing flying machine. Examples of this experimental aircraft are flying today.
You were the finest of men dear Uncle and made the world a better place than you found it. I will miss you. Thank you for your kindest and for taking such a keen interest in our family. Our last time together was one of laughs, hugs and the sharing of great memories. Of course we shared a cold beer on the back deck. It was The Parting Glass.

Len was my brother and a lifelong friend. He was a good man and a caring man........ a man who had such a wonderful clear and logical way of looking at life's problems. A man that so many of us went to for solid advice.
I have always been so proud of my big brother and his many accomplishments.
Doe and I will always take solace in the thoughts of the many wonderful dinners on their deck at "Summer Tides".
I will sorely miss Len's smile and his loving counsel.
Roger
