Obituary of Isabella Armstrong

Armstrong, Isabella Dykes, 89, of Granville Beach, Annapolis County, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2014 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Jeannie (Burnside) Macdonald. Isabella and Wilfred were married in Glasgow, and she immigrated to Canada as a war bride arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax on the Queen Mary in September 1946. She had worked for seven years at Templeton's Carpet factory at Clydebank in Scotland, the last five of those years went towards the war effort making uniforms. The war had a profound impact on her life, making her very sensitive to loud noises. Isabella often spoke of life during the war and the air-raids. Once in Canada she settled down to a busy life as a wife and mother, taking pride in her needle work (especially cross-stitch) and knitting for the whole family. A member of the Horticultural Society, her flower gardens, especially her roses and gladiolas, won awards in the local garden shows. The family will always remember her fabulous rolls and cheesecakes. She is survived by her daughters, Nina (Ed) Dyer of Boutiliers Point, Irene Armstrong (Ron Corkum) of Arlington, Kings Co., Nancy Armstrong of Lake Echo and Linda (John) Sigouin of Ottawa; sons, Malcolm and William of Granville Beach; five grandchildren, Alan and John Dyer, Robert (Bea) Campbell, Richard "Rick" Corkum and Paul Sigouin; great grandchildren, Aidan and Portia Campbell. Isabella is also survived by her sisters, Mary MacDonald of Dufftown, Scotland and Jean Macdonald of Glasgow, Scotland; brother, Donald (Chris) Macdonald, Feltham, London, England. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred in 2004. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with funeral service to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday April 9, both from the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Annapolis Royal with Rev. Elizabeth Waugh officiating. Interment following the service in Stoney Beach Cemetery Granville Beach. In Isabella's memory, memorial donations may be made to the N. S.
