Alice was my Aunt…I spent many hours in the shoe store talking in the back which was her makeshift office..my concern is with the obituary and whoever wrote it..Alice and Vic never had any children..David Norman Urquhart was Joan Doreen Shaws son from her first marriage..he was my half-brother..fact…my mother would be devastated that someone..and I do know who put out this information, would say this false statement…unbelievable…

I like many of the other Bridgetown folk who wrote condolences was fitted for many pairs of shoes by Alice. She always knew me by name and always had a beautiful smile for all. She was a classy lady with the nicest nails in town! In 2012 I was home visiting and my good friend Matt Shaw (whom Alice spoke to on a regular basis) asked me to go visit her and give her a hug for him. When I walked in the back door of the big brick house she looked at me and said "so good to see you Yvonne dear, come sit down". I spent some time showing her pics of Matt whom she adored and we chatted about everything. Upon leaving I gave her that big hug from Matt and felt the warmth that radiated around her. I was very happy that I took the time to stop and say hello to such a beautiful soul. You will be missed Alice. May angels lead u in. Farewell.

So much can be written and said about Alice. Having known her all my life, I particularly enjoyed my visits with her in later years. Her knowledge and understanding of the town of Bridgetown were remarkable. In fact, she pierced the glass ceiling of women in business long before the concept became fashionable. A favourite saying of mine is "only connect - live in fragments no longer." She mastered the art of communications in her attachment to nephews David Urquhart, Michael Urquhart, and Matthew Shaw, who called in regularly to her speaker phone. She surmounted so much with her strong mind and spirit - long may her example endure for us all.

I was fortunate to know Ali Bruce very personally; I was an adopted member of the Bruce's Shoe Store family and learned many lessons growing up as a teenager, from Vic and Ali Bruce. I worked in the store part-time and weekends during my high school years. I was "little Ali" and she was "Big Ali"; she was always there for me. Their store was ahead of its time and catered to customers throughout the province and beyond.
I learned my business ethics from Ali and she was proud that I eventually established my own publishing business as I wrote many cookbooks and a children's book to honour my Mother, Rose, another centenarian and upstanding citizen of the Town. Ali and Rose were the best of friends who kept in touch weekly with each other. They are the essence of Bridgetown citizens and I am also proud to have come from this great Town.
Ali will always be remembered for her elegance, her dignity, her smile and her graciousness. Her spirit will live on in the Town for many generations.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mrs Bruce. I remember when I was a little girl, going to Bridgetown to visit my grandparents, Gordon and Dorothy Mahaney. The highlight of the trip was taking a walk down the street with my grandmother and my little brother, to get fitted for a new pair of shoes. It wasn't just about the shoes, but the whole experience. As Mrs. Bruce carefully fitted us for the perfect pair, I felt so lucky, as if I was royalty! We would always leave with perfectly fitting shoes, with an extra bounce in our step :)
Mrs. Bruce will be greatly missed.
Sincerely,
Claire Mahaney

Our deepest sympathy at this time. Alice was a truly great lady, with a special warmth and kindness for all. We will all miss her greatly. When my son Jonathan was 5 he lost his grandfather, and that summer went all over Bridgetown with his grandfathers hip waders on. Alice told him one day to come in and she would give him a pair of boots that would fit him. He thanked her very much and said "No, thanks, I have him's boots" She knew right away that him was what he called his grandfather, and was very moved by how much those old boots meant to a little boy. Even now, almost 30 years later, Jonathan still remembers the kindness of this dear lady, who will always be in our thoughts.

dear Alice Bruce was the ideal of the bold, vibrant, in style person we hear is needed today. I had the pleasure of knowing her as a Heritage Trust member and when working with Heritage Canada and the Mainstreet program in Bridgetown.
Her laugh was infectious, and her view of the world on point even if sometimes pointed.
She knew her shoe business and I still proudly wear a pair from England. I would call her to say what good leather they were.
I knew her brick house before I knew her as I took a wrong turn in the 1970s and was amazed to see it sitting in the grass drive.
To know the owner was also amazing with her stories of living in the 'chicken coop' at Carleton Corner when she was young. So many stories I hope I remember them all as she told them.
And the cape coat and her driving the orange Camaro up over the mountain to the beach house overlooking the Bay of Fundy. What laughs and good times and kindness to cats
She missed those who had gone before her and we will miss her.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mrs Bruce. Every piece of footwear purchased for me for the first 17 years of my life was made at Bruces's. The care and attention to fitting my shoes I still remember and have had nothing close to that attention since. Mrs Bruce was able to coax my mother into a "fancier" pair of shoes for me instead of the brown oxfords my mother wanted. I always dreamt about getting into the back room of that store. She was a great, great lady and as noted, a style icon in a small town. Rest in Peace , Alice and thank you for showing young girls in a small town in the 60'a-70's what it was to be a woman in business.

This lady took such an interest in everyone who came through her door. Alice Bruce was a lady of grace. She had the spirit of an angel, and the gentleness of a warm summer breeze upon you. She loved many, and was loved by many. I looked forward to coming to Bridgetown from Granville Ferry and driving past "Bruce's Shoe Store" to see what she had created in the store window. It was even better when we had to go into the store and she fitted us for shoes; knowing what we could afford and what would last longest and still look good. Our dear Alice Bruce was one of Bridgetown's treasures, and a blessing to the town. I sincerely hope that there will be something that has to be named within the town, that will carry her name. She is so deserving. RIP Alice Bruce.

Very sorry for your loss. Mrs. Alice Bruce was a lovely lady which was nicely expressed in her obituary. Years ago now, Odile Boyd had invited Mrs. Bruce to her Mary Kay nail parry. I was the Mary Kay Consultant. Of course she attended and was so interested in all the nail care products. However, she could no longer see well enough to do her own nails and this distressed her. So I gave her a full manicure complete with a vibrant polish. She was very pleased. Always impeccably presented, a manicure was the finishing touch for her.

I was so sorry to read of the death of Alice. She was a wonderful lady, and I have many wonderful memories of visits with her in the store. I can still see those lovely, long fingernails and those stiletto heels. Alice had a beautiful hand. Just before graduation at the high school, I would go to Alice with special certificates in hand and a list of names. She would write each name on each certificate in black ink. I do hope some of those certificates have been saved by recipients. The Bruce Trophy is still presented at BRHS to the top athlete from the graduating class, a fitting reminder of the contributions Alice and Vic Bruce made to the town of Bridgetown. Both she and Vic were part of the fabric of what makes a small town special. Farewell, Alice. You will be lovingly remembered by so many.

I am saddened to hear about the death of sweet Alice Bruce. I spent many days perusing her shoe store in the late 70`s and early 80`s dreaming of the next pair of shoes I could afford with my babysitting money. There was this pair of cowboy boots I had set my sights on and stopped in to admire regularly and Alice put them aside so that my Mom and Dad could surprise me at Christmas with the exact pair! She consoled me when she realized my disappointment that they had been "sold" and reassured me she would be getting a new shipment. Alice was always so sweet and kind and such an elegant lady. She will be missed! Thoughts and prayers to all her beloved family and friends. May all your warm and wonderful memories of Alice bring comfort to you all.
