Catherine (Kay) Smith (nee Ryan)

October 14, 1927 – June 16, 2019

Born in Quebec City, Quebec, Catherine passed away at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital in Middleton, Nova Scotia on June 16th, 2019 in her 92nd year. She was predeceased in 1985 by her husband George F. Smith. She is survived by her son and caregiver Wayne and son-in-law Paul Paquette; she is also survived by her sons Garry (Mary) of Oakville Ontario, Bruce (Cindy) of Chute-a-Blondeau Ontario, and her brother-in-law Alex Smith of Timmins Ontario. She was a loving Nanny to Darren (Julie), Chad (Leanne), Tracey (Shawn), Carl, Ryan, Andrew, and Corey, and great-grandchildren, Nadia, Cedric, Kai, Axl, Taylor, Emma, Riley Rae, Gabriella, Stella and Bruce. She will be fondly remembered by her dear friend Jackie Easby. She was also predeceased by her parents John and Emma Ryan; brothers Patrick, Gerard and William; sisters Alice and Mary. Kay was a Past Matron of Capital City Chapter #172 Order of the Eastern Star. Wayne and Paul would like to express a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kevin McGuire and the nurses of the Medical Unit of Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Janet Welton, Erica Maynard, and all the VON caregivers and nurses who made Kay’s last five years wonderful.

Kay’s family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday June 23rd from 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm at the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home,190 St. Anthony, St. Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia. Funeral Service will be held on Monday June 24th 10:30 am at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 342 St. George, St. Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia, followed by a reception at 91 Prince Albert Rd., Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia. Kay’s ashes will be conveyed to Ontario where family and friends will be received on Thursday, July 4th from 1 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm at Lamarre & Son Funeral Home, 453 St. Philippe St., Alfred Ontario. The Order of the Eastern Star Funeral Service will be conducted at 1 pm on July 4th in the funeral home – all are welcome. Visitation continues on Friday, July 5th at 9:30 am, with a Celebration of Kay’s Life at 10 am, followed by internment at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Water St., Plantagenet Ontario, where she will be laid to rest with her husband George. Donations to the Canadian Lung Association, Canadian Cancer Society, or CNIB would be appreciated.
