I was very sorry to learn that Mrs. Everett was ill and then that she had passed away. I may not have known her very well and it had been several years since I had last seen her but I will always remember her as a fine and lovely lady. So very sorry for your loss.

Kim, Cindy, and Darrell,
We were so sad to receive your call telling us of your mom's passing away. Gerrie was a wonderful lady and always showed her love of her children, and grandson, and spoke of how you were all doing. Also of the love of her life, Danny, a good man, full of fun and always ready to tease. We'll always remember, and will miss the times they would drop by and lift our spirits with their friendship and laughter. Even through troubling times, there were always somethings to be thankful for. We offer our sincere condolences and pray that many good memories will comfort you at this sad time.

I don’t really remember the day that I met “Mrs. Everett”. It was some 46 years ago that she first let me into her house and I was a bit nervous. She and “Mr. Everett” made me feel comfortable … so I kept coming back. I got to know the Everetts quite well. I spent a lot of time in their company and under their influence. I was to become quite fond of them.
Gerrie always impressed me as a firm, spirited lady with a BIG heart. What this sweet lady ever saw in me remains a mystery but she never chased me away.
Mine was a missionary family serving in Africa. We lived “worlds apart.” I was master of my own destiny with few constraints. How fortunate I was to meet the Everetts and be accepted into their world. In seeing to the welfare of her own, Mrs. Everett took me under her wing too… an ugly duckling that the cat had dragged in. Such became my respect, and fondness for her that I responded to (most of) her suggestions. As a young man living on my own, I benefited greatly from the care and concern directed my way by “Mrs. Everett”. So it was that my close association with Gerrie and Dannie took on special meaning.
Gerrie displayed tremendous inner strength. She ran a tight ship. She gave voice to her experience, wisdom and expectations alike. Attention to protocol was important while within her reach. She never took me by the ears but I dared not rule out the possibility that “Mrs. Everett” might well know where to lay her hands on a big stick if need be! She could be funny but always “kept it real” :-)
Gerrie was very instrumental, along with Dannie, in mentoring me into a career in the RCMP, a personal goal that I might not have achieved without their encouragement and active support.
I left Digby for Regina in 1978 to confront myself. Strengths & weaknesses were laid bare. Graduation was pivotal but had a bittersweet taste. It was difficult to head out into the world and leave Digby behind. I could not bring myself to simply say a big “Thank You”, close the car door, buckle up and fade off into the sunset. Gerrie saw me off but we kept in touch.
Luxury cruises across the Bay of Funday presented opportunities to stop in and pay respect. So it was that Gerrie & Dannie were hard pressed to escape my charm and continued affection over the years. I was honoured by their attendance at my wedding.
Gerrie and her family tolerated and shared so much with me. It comforts me at this time, as I’m sure it will in the future, to know that I pointedly made her aware of how much I thought of her. Gerrie was near and dear to me. She gave much of herself to give others a start in life.
It may not be my place, and I may not be worthy, but I too will miss her like a mother.
A remarkably stalwart & fearless matriarch has stepped aside.
The day that I met “Mrs. Everett” left an impression on my life that I will never forget to remember.
And so I pay tribute to Gerrie Everett, a very special person in my life.
May her family find comfort in the words of a hymn written by C. Austin Myles:
I come to the garden alone.
I send my heart.
Cpl. S.K. (Steve) Gorman, RCMP (Retired)
