Darrell Karnes was a very special mentor to so many of us young riders in the 90's while on the Musical Ride. The very first time I was in the school with him he would ride up beside you and try to pull you off of your horse to teach you to sit your horse, and he would have that big smile.
At Spruce Meadows in Alberta before our show Darrell rode his great Staff horse Major in front of the crowd of 10,000 people and put on a show of Piaffe and Passage. The crowd errupted in applause. You just wanted to do your best for him and he made you better.
Darrell was a great Ride Master not because of his riding skills but because of his ability to motivate and get the best out of people. When the show went on he expected the best and got it. We all will miss him but remember the lessons he taught us.
Darrell Karnes will not walk through the gates of heaven. He will be on Major and ride through nodding at St. Peter with that big smile of his.
My condolences to Darrell's family on the passing of a great man who did so much for those around him.

Darrell’s Grandmother Edna and my Grandmother Arvilla were sisters.
Darrell and I were both born in 1945. We went to school together in Bridgetown, both Elementary and High School.
My Mother Enna and Mert enjoyed each other’s company as did Dad and Merwyn. As a result, the families visited regularly. I always loved the Karnes’ dry sense of humour!
We reconnected through horses when our daughter, Louisa wanted to buy a horse. The RCMP were holding a dispersal sale in Ottawa. Darrell was sure the person to talk to! He knew the breeding lines, the temperament of the horses. He helped us choose a beautiful, pregnant mare named Waverley. We had to bid at the auction on Waverley and brought her home to Nova Scotia. She was a great horse. Her foul Tallison was born several months later. There are lots of stories. Waverley and Tallison were part of our family for many years.
Last summer we had a lovely visit with Darrell. Just stopped by Nova Scotia style, sat in the yard of the Karnes’ home for several hours, had many good laughs as we recounted stories.
Our condolences to the family. Darrell was a great man.
We send our love.

Darrell and I were close friends in training and I caught up with him only once more a few years later when he was on the ride. In training we had to contribute $1 when we got thrown off a horse. It was a tribute to his ability that he got thrown off one day but landed on his feet with the reins still in his hands. We still made him pay $1.
He will be missed.

It saddens me to know that Darrell has passed and my heart goes out to you. Back in 1980 I brought my horse Fred to board at Twin Maple Farm and he enjoyed many years of great care there from Darrell and later, from Russ. Many fond memories were formed there and I will always remember Darrell's sense of humour and his love for the horses.

In 1990 I went to Camrose Ab to spend a weekend with Len Klimpke and the Musical Ride as happened whenever the Ride came to Alberta. It was there that I met Darrell. He was the kind of man that you just don’t forget. He was very good to me that weekend and definitely left an impression. He was a gentleman in every way and a master of his trade and earned my total respect. I wish Darrell’s Family my sincere condolences. May he Rest In Peace. He will not be forgotten.

To Darrell's wife, daughters and Donna Marie. We want to pass along our sincere sympathy on the passing of Darrell.
I Harland met Darrell at BRHS and we became friends. When he moved back to Bridgetown every time we would meet we would always have a good conversation.
Many years ago the Musical Ride was at the Lawrencetown Exhibition Grounds for a Saturday and the evening before I met Darrell in Bridgetown and I mentioned to him that I was looking after a Lions Club parade the next day which would be before the Ride in Lawrenceton so I ask if it might be possible for him to bring a horse for the parade and he said he would see what he could do. Well before the parade was to start Darrell arrived with two other riders. A great thrill for all for Darrell to do this in his home town where he was known by so many.

Karen and girls.
So sorry to hear of Darrell's passing.
From reading the tributes I don't think I can come up with any more adjectives about Darrell that hasn't already been said.
A great guy, mentor and friend.
While on staff together we laughed and teased each other on a daily basis.
He was so helpful and supportive when I was training remounts and when I wanted a horse to go a certain way, to "Hey Fin, things will go better tomorrow and to bringing in a pint of chocolate milk to drink as he said "this is to to ease the pain Fin" after being an all night "runaway" with Billy Stewart.
I had just received your email address last fall. I had written up a "life after the Branch" message with pictures of the farm and horses here. I was going to send it out at Christmas time, sadly however I didn't get it done.
The world would be a better place if we had more Darrell Karnes' amongst us.
Take Care and God Bless Karen and family

Everyone who had a chance to work with Darrell on the Musical Ride had the privilege of seeing first hand his natural ability as a rider and as a horseman. I have great memories of Darrell, and very specifically this one... In my personal quest to be a better rider during my time on the Ride, I took some riding lessons at a private stable. In the spring of 1997 Darrell came to me and asked me if I was in fact taking riding lessons. I expected that he would question me as to why I was not sticking to the riding teachings of the RCMP. On the contrary, Darrell told me to fill out a request for payment for the lessons, and the branch would pay for it. His unexpected support gave me even more dedication to be better rider. I still remember the feeling I had when he told me that, I will never forget it... He was a good man. My sympathy to Karen and her family.

When I landed at “N” Division for my equitation training in 1981 it was as regimented as the basic training environment. Sgt. Karnes’ confidence as an impressive horseman quickly earned our respect. His sense of humor kept many of us entertained, most of all him. Friday fun days in the riding school still make for stories that are unbelievable by today’s standards. Darrell was a patient and compassionate man who always had something funny to say, and when I think of his mischevious grin and devious chuckle it still makes me smile. When the going got tough or the drudgery was unbearable he could always make us laugh…often at our expense, but funny nonetheless. He was a formative and formidable leader who shaped the Equitation Branch for 3 decades and for years to come. I am sorry for your loss, and my thoughts are with Darrell’s family.

Darrell and I were in the same RCMP troop in Regina and got posted together with Don Crooks and Don James to Ottawa. We all shared an apartment for a few years until we went our separate ways. Darrell was a great guy who seemed to be happy all the time, a great friend, an outstanding RCMP member and an exceptional rider. In riding classes in Regina he was recognized by the riding instructors as exceptional, a qualification he carried on with the Musical Ride for many years. His love for horses was always very strong and he was in his element with the Ride. Darrell was the best of the best and will be greatly missed - rest in peace my good friend!

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. As a young constable I had the privilege to have Darrell as an NCO on the Musical Ride. Darrell was a true professional and leader. He had a flair for teaching and demonstrating how to ride a horse. Darrell had a great sense of humour and for a young guy travelling the world on the ride, he kept me on the straight and narrow most of the time. He was true to the phrase “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man”. Simply a great guy.

Dana, Shauna and Karen, my heart goes out to you all as well as your families. Your dad was like a second dad to me growing up. I remember his warm spirit and great laugh. Showing us around the RCMP stables every summer and making sure we stayed out of trouble ( mostly! ). Having lost my dad a couple of years ago I share your pain and sadness. I wish I could be there to give a big hugs.

So sorry to hear of Darrell's passing. Our condolences go out to Karen and family at this time of sorrow. Darrell was such a wonderful person, full of life, knowledge and, of course, humour. I recall a few visits to the farm outside of Ottawa. And if I recall, some consumption of liquid refreshments. RIP buddy.
